Quizlet or Coursity? Flashcards for Memorizing, a Tutor for Your Professor's Slides

Quizlet is built for memorizing with flashcards; Coursity is a tutor built from your course files, uploaded or imported from supported course sites. How each fits a class, how setup works, and what each costs.

I've used Quizlet as a student, and these days I build Coursity, one of the apps it gets compared with. With Quizlet, it was on me to go through all the material and make sure I hadn't missed anything. Having someone else track what I'd mastered is what I wanted instead, and it's what I set out to build.

Vocab-heavy class: Quizlet. Its flashcards and its library of ready-made sets are made for memorizing terms, drug names or dates for a history survey. A class that runs on your professor's slides, where you need things explained and someone keeping track of which topics you've got, is the one to bring to Coursity.

Last checked: October 1, 2026.

The Quizlet details come from its own site, read logged out in the US and listed at the bottom. Prices can differ by region or account. I didn't open the app to check anything for this post or run the two side by side.

How do you get a class into each one?

In Quizlet, through sets; in Coursity, through your course page or your files.

Quizlet: find a set someone already made, or build one by typing terms, pasting a list, or letting Smart Assist turn your notes into cards. To work from the course files themselves, Study Guides take .docx, .pdf or .pptx uploads two at a time, up to 25 MB each, or a doc or presentation from Google Drive.

Coursity: install Coursity Capture in Chrome (no school setup needed), then on your course's Content page click the Coursity button and Import. Slides, documents, pages and links come across in that one import, a stray file may need uploading by hand, and the syllabus is used to draft the course's structure. It works on Canvas, Brightspace and other course sites at the vendor's own address; if your school's course site has its own address, upload the files directly for now.

Quizlet is built for memorizing, with a library and an app to match

The routine is: find or make a set, run it through Learn, take a Test before the exam. On the website, spaced repetition has you rate each card Repeat, Hard, Okay or Easy and can send a review reminder at 10 a.m. There are games too (Match, Blast, Blocks, Quizlet Live). Coursity doesn't do flashcards at all, so if your class is mostly memorizing, this is the loop you want.

The library is the bigger deal. Quizlet's upgrade page advertises "millions of flashcards covering a wide range of subjects," so for a big intro course there's a decent chance someone already made your set. Expert Solutions are step-by-step textbook solutions written and verified by experts, with AI buttons that explain a step or generate a practice problem. Coursity has no shared library. It only knows what you bring in.

Quizlet is on your phone, and Coursity isn't. The iOS and Android apps let you study offline with Flashcards and Match (Quizlet's subscription page lists offline studying among the paid features, so check your plan), and the app can record a lecture and turn it into a study guide and a flashcard set. Practice Tests can turn your uploaded material into a full-length mock exam, currently for the sciences and humanities, and if your instructor adds you to a Quizlet class, you get unlimited, ad-free Learn and Test on that class's sets for free.

Coursity explains your course and tracks it topic by topic

Once the course is in, you work through it with the tutor. It cites the slide or page it used, so you can open the deck and check. When you get something wrong, it explains the idea again and changes how deep it goes, and drills and quizzes come up inside the conversation. The way its explanations build on what you've already shown you know came partly out of my intermediate accounting class.

Quizlet's AI chat, Ask Quizlet, gives "step-by-step explanations grounded in what they're studying." Its help page doesn't mention citing a page or passage. (If you remember Q-Chat, Quizlet's older AI tutor: Quizlet says it's no longer available as of June 2025.)

Quizlet's Progress view, a paid feature, sorts a set's terms by how often you got them right or wrong, so it works per set and per term. Coursity tracks mastery for each topic in the course. It can show you're fine on revenue recognition and shaky on leases even though those came from different weeks of slides, and a topic you haven't reviewed in a while comes back around. It also pulls due dates out of your syllabus onto your calendar, which helps most if your deadlines are sitting in a syllabus PDF you haven't opened since the first week.

Coursity only works in English, which matters if the class you're thinking of is a language.

Quizlet Plus Unlimited is $44.99 a year, and Coursity Plus is $39 a semester

As of October 1, 2026, Quizlet Plus is $35.99 a year or $7.99 a month in the US, and Plus Unlimited is $44.99 a year or $9.99 a month, according to Quizlet's upgrade page. Plus caps you at 3 practice tests and 20 rounds of Learn a month, and Unlimited removes the caps. The 7-day trial only comes with annual plans, and when it ends you're "auto-billed for one year and every year after unless you cancel," with an email from Quizlet before the renewal date. Monthly plans have no trial and can be cancelled anytime. The free plan has flashcards and games, with limited Learn, Test, Practice Tests and Study Guides. The only free limit Quizlet puts a number on is Test: one free practice test per set.

Coursity's free plan has the full tutor and 2 courses, with no card to start, but after 14 days free use is about 20 tutor replies a week. Plus is $9.99 a month or $39 a semester (about 150 replies a week), and Pro is $19.99 a month or $79 a semester (about 300), with no trial. A semester plan is one payment for 4 months and doesn't renew. A monthly plan keeps renewing until you cancel it, cancelling stops it at the end of the billing period, and the account goes back to free without deleting anything. Coursity's terms don't say anything about refunds or a reminder before renewal. $44.99 buys a year of Quizlet Plus Unlimited, while $39 buys one 4-month semester of Coursity Plus, so on price alone, Quizlet is far cheaper.

Check Expert Solutions before you pay for anything

Search Quizlet for your textbook and your course number first. A textbook in Expert Solutions might be worth the $44.99 on its own, and sets someone already made for your course may be all you need. When nothing turns up but your professor's own deck, bring that course into Coursity instead. It's free to start and doesn't ask for a card.
